Fall Leaf Tour to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff Estate Sat. Oct. 6

On Saturday, October 6th we have planned a full day event, departing from Willoughby at 8:30am, and returning by 6:00pm. We will drive 150 miles to attend a 90-minute restoration tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff Estate, in Derby, NY, followed by a luncheon at The Public House on the Lake where we will dine together in a room overlooking Lake Erie. We will make a pit stop at a halfway point in Erie, PA.

The restoration tour of Graycliff is led by a trained docent and covers the exteriors and grounds of the estate as well as the first and second floors of the main house. Our tour will be one of the first offered to a private group since the recent completion of the main house’s restoration. The restoration took a decade to complete and cost several million dollars from private donors. We will learn about the evolution of Wright’s plans for this summer estate during its design in the mid-1920s, and about Wright’s architecture, during his mid-career organic style. We will learn about the unique restoration of the estate, returning it to its original design.

The cost of this event is $25.00 per person, and separate bills will be provided for luncheon choices.

The meeting place will be the Speedway station located in the southeast corner of the intersection of I-90 and route 306 (4188 Broadmoor Road, Willoughby, OH). We will depart promptly at 8:30am, and make a pit stop at exit #24 at the intersection of I-90 and route 19, in Erie, PA. The Shell station is located right off the freeway on the southwest corner. We should arrive at Graycliff at 11:15am for our 11:30am tour. Fine restrooms are located in The Pavilion Gift Shop where we will meet our docent. Our cars will be parked inside a secure private estate situated within a lovely residential neighborhood.

After the tour we will drive a couple of miles east to The Public House on the Lake (4914 Lake Shore Road, Hamburg, NY). Our luncheon is scheduled for 1:30pm and we will dine together in a room overlooking Lake Erie. The restaurant is known for its well-stocked bar, long list of draft beers, and extensive food menu. We should return to the Cleveland area by 6:00pm.
