Oberlin Luncheon & Frank Lloyd Wright Tour Sat. April 13th

On Saturday, April 13th we will meet at 1:00 p.m. for lunch at The Black River Cafe, 15 South Main Street, in Oberlin. We will order off the menu and will have individual checks.

At 3:00pm we will arrive at The Weltzheimer/Johnson House located at 534 Morgan Street in Oberlin for a private docent-led tour of this 1948 Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house. This house is owned and maintained by Oberlin College/ Allen Memorial Art Museum and is one of the few Usonian houses in the nation open to the public.

The first of nine Usonian homes to be built in Ohio, the house bears the typical features of the Usonian style: brick construction, an “L” shaped plan, a flat roof with large overhangs and a carport. The Weltzheimer house is, however, unusual in a number of respects. It is the only Usonian built outside of California that used redwood in its construction.

The house was later owned by Ellen H. Johnson, who purchased the house in 1968 and reversed some of the changes made by prior owners. The house including a maintenance endowment was transferred to Oberlin College upon her death in 1992.

The cost for the tour of this historic property is $12.00 per person; lunch is paid separately.
